Ham and Potato Bake
Jane's Aventures in Dinner


Ingredients
  • Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • one small onion (sliced)
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 3/4 cups chicken stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • salt and pepper to taste (start with 1/4 tsp each)
  • butter (to cover 5 x 9 casserole)
  • Layers:
  • 1 large potato (sliced thinly 1/4 inch)
  • ham to layer (approx 12 slices)
  • Topping
  • 1/3 cup of Panko crumbs.
  • 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
  1. Melt sauce butter in a medium pan and saute onion until soft (not coloured). Stir in flour and stir for 30 seconds to get rid of the raw flour taste. Slowly add in the milk and chicken stock stirring to make a smooth sauce. Add seasoning.
  2. To assemble; butter casserole, layer of potatoes, ham, potatoes, ham and end with potatoes. Pour over sauce, top with panko and dot with butter.
  3. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees.
