Croque Monsieur Casserole
Jane's Adventures in Dinner

Ingredients
  • Bechamel:
  • 1/8 cup butter
  • 1/8 cup flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 4 slices ham (you can use a deli ham or carve your own)
  • Biscuits:
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • pinch salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 cup soured milk or buttermilk
  • 8 slices swiss cheese
  • Butter for casseroles.
Instructions
  1. Bechamel: melt butter, add flour and cook for a couple of seconds to get rid of the raw flour taste. Slowly add in the milk and add seasonings. Leave off to the side to cool.
  2. Biscuits: rub together shortening and flour, salt and leavening agents together to pebble size, add in milk. Lightly knead the dough and cut into 8 biscuits. Feel free to use a tube of biscuits to skip this part-you deserve a break.
  3. Butter four casseroles (you can do this in a 9x9 pan too) and follow the above directions for layering.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes at 385 degrees or until biscuits have puffed and the cheese on top has bubbled.
