Screen Doors and Sweet Tea
Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook
I got this cookbook as a gift when I retired, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. Just the title of this book made me want to read it, but the book definitely lives up to the promise of the name. Author Martha Hall Foose successfully combines wonderful and unique recipes with Missisippi tales---some humorous, some touching, all interesting--to create a cookbook that is highly readable. Foose, a Mississippi native, brings both her heritage and her knowledge of cooking (she is the executive chef of the Viking Cooking School) to this book that is a must-have for the southern cook or anyone who would like to understand the love and traditions that help make food such an important part of southern life.
