Make-It-Yourself Cracker Jacks
Ingredients
4 cups popped popcorn
1 cup shelled peanuts
1⁄2 cup molasses
1⁄4 cup sugar
Directions
Mix popcorn and peanuts together in a large bowl. Cook molasses and sugar together until the mixture reaches a temperature of 235 degrees on a candy thermometer. If you do not have a thermometer, test the syrup by letting some drop from a spoon into a cup of cold water. If the syrup forms a thread as it drops into the water, it is done. Pour the hot syrup over the popcorn-nut mixture and stir to coat evenly. Cool and break into chunks with a wooden spoon. Store in an airtight container. (Gift idea: place in a clean jelly Mason jar or ornamental paper gift bag.) Note: A candy thermometer is recommended to test the temperature of the syrup that binds the popcorn and nuts together.
